Connecting Spiritually with Your Spouse

How do you connect spiritually with your spouse?

Some couples are so structured that their devotions are like mini-church. They gather together each night, read from the Bible, and hold hands while praying.

That’s not very realistic for most of us. At least, not very often. We live at a fast pace. Connection happens on the move while we’re getting the kids to school or off to Little League practice. It’s not until late in the evening that we’re settled enough to have meaningful conversation.

The trouble with all of that busyness is that we lose sight of an important truth: We’re human beings, not human doings.

That’s not mere semantics. At its core, spiritual intimacy is about who you and your spouse are together, not simply what you do. If Jesus is the cornerstone of your faith (Ephesians 2:20), then He will be the cornerstone of your marriage as well.

The common understanding will connect your hearts, your souls, and your minds  – every part of your being  – as you pursue God together. It allows us to offer one another the deepest parts of who we are.

How can couples form meaningful spiritual bonds when they’re busy with kids, work, bills, and stuff to get done around the house?

Authors and marriage experts Dr. Greg and Erin Smalley are with us on our Focus on the Family Broadcast “Connecting Spiritually with Your Spouse” to help couples create deeper spiritual intimacy in their relationship. That endeavor can be a profound struggle, but they encourage couples. “It’s not a linear, straight-line pursuit. It’s a messy journey into the unknown – a few steps forward, a few steps backward.”

They’re also quick to say that it’s worth the effort. Marriages that lack spiritual connection almost always create pain and loneliness. With spiritual connection, they thrive.
