For over 45 years, Dr. Tony Evans has served as senior pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas, Texas, which has grown from ten people to over 10,000.
He’s also a former NFL chaplain who has spoken to several Super Bowl teams on the eve of the big game. One characteristic each of those winning teams shared was an intense focus on the ultimate prize – the Lombardi Trophy. None of the players were satisfied with having a winning record or making the playoffs. The only goal that mattered was winning the championship.
The ultimate victory for Christians is eternity with Jesus. Paul said, “I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 3:14).
The problem is that distractions often divert us from living with an intense focus on that eternal goal. We gravitate toward “shiny objects” – new relationships, career opportunities, or the pursuit of financial gain. While each of those can have their place, when they supplant our primary goal, the shine eventually wears off, and the enemy swoops in to “steal, kill, and destroy” (John 10:10), leaving us ineffectual in our Christian walk.
How do we live with an eternal perspective that fuels every aspect of our lives?
Dr. Tony Evans is with us on our Focus on the Family Broadcast “Having a Kingdom Mindset in Our Walk with God” to inspire believers toward “kingdom living.”
Dr. Evans explains that we become “kingdom citizens” by acting as a visible followers of Jesus Christ who consistently apply the principles of heaven to the concerns of the culture. To do this, we need “kingdom clarity,” which aligns our thoughts, words, and actions with the guiding and predominant influence of God’s Kingdom perspective.
Dr. Evans and I discuss:
- What is a kingdom citizen?
- The pursuit of Christ.
- Spiritual infancy.
- Pressing on in weakness and lessons learned through loss.
- A lost culture and a weak church.
- Discipline in our walk.
- The dangers of loving money and possessions above God.
- Staying on course. Abiding in Christ free of worry.
- The payoff – hope in Christ.
As Joshua commanded the Hebrews to “choose this day whom you will serve” (Josh. 24:15), so we as Christians must also choose whether we will live for the Lord or for ourselves.
